Do you use a signature file?Views: 1510

Heidi Richards

Hello Everyone!

I am writing an article for a new publication about the use of signature files and have a couple of questions for you.

#1 Do you use signature files?

If not, why not?

If so, how do you use yours? (feel free to share it in this thread)

2. Do you have more than one that you use for different occasions? Please explain.

For those of you who are unsure of what a signature file is Shiftnetworks.com has a good definition that I like to share: A signature line or file is "a short message placed at the bottom of an e- mail message or a discussion group posting that identifies the sender and can include items such as phone number, fax number, address, information about the person's occupation or company, and even a philosophical saying or humorous message."

Thanks so much!

Look I found a strongly scented clean burning candle.

Yes....I use lots of them, and it depends on where Im playing
in cyberspace as to which one I use.

I have some that link to blogs, others that link to my
websites. Blogs are usually used for course info.

I have six or seven signature files at any given time.

I use them for email, but not here (or most other networking fora), unless it's on a very specific network, and I want to mention a specific thing. I can't keep switching messages, or people get confused.

Well, they get confused anyway, but I can usually fix it if I know what they do, and couch it in terms they understand. Why?

My business does websites, but not for clients. Mentioning my company only leads to requests for help with people's sites followed by a long, drawn out discussion about why we don't do client sites. (I have yet to figure out a polite way to word, "because I am a control freak, and clients always want to do stupid things against my advice, so I reworked my business model to eliminate them.")

The individual signatures are for specific projects, whereas, if people are curious about what I do, they can click through and see for themselves.

On top of that, none of the project "are me", and I kind of dislike being definied by one specific thing, even in passing. (If you meet me, you will notice that I always say, "I own..." or "my company does..." not "I am a...")

Clear as mud?

Responding again to this message simply becasue I updated
my sig file, so that I could make it easier for people
to find some of my stuff, without having to always go to my
websites or other *sub-blogs*.

I needed an overall simple sig line, which would
include my new MasterBlog...and here it is:

Hi Heidi,

Not sure if you're still interested, but I always use a signature. Currently, I only use one, which is as follows:

Respectfully,
Jeff Fioravanti, CPS, PPSCC, PSA
Painting the Soul of America
http://www.fioravanti-fineart.com

I use my tagline because my work not only features the pastoral scenes of America, but also because I have worked with a number of preservation and conservation groups, to promote their cause via art. It is a way to try to connect people back to America, to take a moment to pause and reflect about its beauty.

I have also recently spoken to several businesses about utilizing artwork as a means to keep their name in front of their important contacts, clients & customers.

Respectfully,
Jeff Fioravanti, CPS, PPSCC, PSA

No, I don't, because:

1. I view sending an email or writing a post as being similar to writing an ordinary (paper) business letter. I wouldn't use a signature file on paper, so why is electronic communications so different?

2. Nearly all the people I communicate with are people I already know. They don't need the signature file. As for public postings like this one, they are always on systems that include links to my profile which does a better job than a three-line signature.

3. When I tried using signature files I found myself changing them with almost every message sent. If it's so important that a link to someplace on my website be included, I might as well just type it.

P.S. As an added bonus, I can tell how tired I am by how I mistype my own name!

I agree with Kurt. If people can just link to your site anyway I don't see the point. Besides I like to change my signature too much to have one thing all the time. I don't talk to everyone the same way because some people I know better than others or I know them from different circles.

That said, I enjoyed checking out some of ya'll's links!
