I wonder since the onset of the Internet, how many folks have stopped going to the library? After all, when you go to the library, what you do often see? You see folks sitting at computers searching for information. Why go to the library to use an online computer when you have one at home?

Well, the library isn't just about books. It's about people who are trained to find all manner of information. We call them "librarians." And, librarians can be of tremendous benefit to folks who take the time to tap into their expertise. In fact, in many cities you do not have to travel to the physical library to tap into their expertise. A simple phone call can make that happen.

I recently told a Ryze member who was seeking advice on determining her target market for a marketing test to seek the library for guidance. She seemed both surprised and thrilled that the library would in fact go to bat for her. If you have questions that need answers, consider asking your local library.

I'm guilty.

I haven't been to a library since I was in school...

but I think I'm going to start going again. I didn't really think about the training that librarians possess. And its a free resouce to me, if I use the public library.

Thanks...

Our state library has started a website to encourage people to use them for information and research. I believe it's www.askcolorado.org.

And why not? They've got more resources at their finger tips than anyone else.

Kimberly,

I could be wrong about this, but I think there is even a toll-free phone number folks can call to get librarian assistance. If that is true, talk about multitasking capabilities...Wow! You could put a lot of things in motion for your business thanks to the efforts of librians. And, what did it cost you? Just the time it took you to make the calls.

I figure I've got a lot more tread on my library card than on my checkbook. If it weren't for public libraries, I'd have about a $3000/year book habit. Plus, they have online access to paid databases that saves me at least another $1000/year. They have an incredible assortment of databases, from local real estate listings to business background and financial information. And then, there is the inter-library-loan program; I can usually get almost any book that I am considering buying, and evaluate it for free before I commit my money.

Actually, I also supplement my book habit with manuscript reviews. Doesn't pay much, but I do get paid to read and comment on technical books (you know, if somebody had told me in the 5th grade that you could get paid to write book reports, that might have been life-changing), and I get my name in the acknowledgement section (even though it's only read by the family and friends of the author). I have some influence over the quality of the technical books that I review. Best part is that I get to read stuff before you do!

I'm a murder mystery junkie, so I'm at the library weekly.

And the reference department has some good resources for marketing research. Just last week, I suggested to a client that he visit the library to look at Gale's Encyclopedia of Associations and photocopy the pages of horse-related associations with mailing lists (he does Chi Kung with horses - his "extreme niche").

If you have products and services for anyone who might belong to a trade or professional association (nurses, doctors, engineers, psychologists, building contractors, vending companies, you name it), you can find these associations in Gales. Most associations sell their mailing labels.

Cheers,

Lamar,

As a librarian, I know the power of libraries, but I also know that you do not have to physically go to one to tap into that power. Many libraries have online databases that people can use for free. In NYS, the state itself is providing online resources to EVERY resident in the state (whether or not those residents realize it). You don't even need a library card to access the database, but just a NYS id or drivers license. (http://www.novelnewyork.org/)

Librarians and library staff members are more than willing to help people find the right resources and information, whether you go in person, contact them over the Internet, or give them a call. Some libraries are using instant messenger to connect with their patrons.

If you are near a college library, especially a "state school", then you have a wonderful resource there, too. State schools must provide some level of help to the general public and many private colleges do the same. Likely you'll find resources there that you won't find at your public library.

And if your an alumni of a college, see what library resources you might be able to tap into! You may be pleasantly surprised.

As for private libraries, like corporate libraries, they are generally not open to the public but sometimes will make something available upon request.

Finally, remember that there are independent information professionals (librarians) who you can hire to help with those research requests that you cannot handle yourself. We -- yes...I'm one -- can tap into a boarder set of resources and have the knowledge to navigate those resources to find what you need.

Jill

P.S. -- Don't forget that your public library has meeting space that you may be able to use for free or inexpensively.

Jill,

I believe there is a toll-free service you can use to actually get librarians to research certain requests and give you a call back. Has anyone here used this service? If so, please coment on it. I would like to know what all it can do for folks that use it.

With regard to using the library conference rooms for meetings, I head up a computer user group for several years. We used a local library conference room for our monthly meetings. However, we did not get access for free. We had to pay a small fee. But, it was extremely reasonable when you compare the library's fee to that of a hotel conference room.

Lamar,

That sounds like an "Ask a Librarian" service. Many are via the Internet, free, and available 24/7. For example, here's one in Western NY (long URL):
