The Real Definition of Search Engine MarketingViews: 1167

It never ceases to amaze me at the number of people that continue to think that seo and search engine marketing are two completely different animals, when in fact, SEO is really a part of search engine marketing, or SEM. These types of people are considered naive at best. To better help you explain this, take a piece of paper and draw three circles in a triangular pattern. Have one circle at the top, and two circles at the bottom. In the top circle, write in SEM. In the bottom two circles, write in SEO and PPC respectively. What this simple diagram shows is that search engine marketing consists of two categories: search engine optimization and pay-per-click advertising. Search engine optimization, or SEO, is the free, organic links, while Pay-per-click are the paid links. We all know that Google is discounting paid links, so being ranked in the organic search results as much more value than pay-per-click.

Hey Nick,

I agree with your breakdown of SEM & SEO.

However, you missed another, highly successful component of SEM/SEO - RSS Feeds.

RSS Feeds, if done with relevant content, will put your SEM/SEO efforts on tri-zillion hyperspeed.

Interesting. I didn't realize there was a difference between SEO and SEM marketing. Granted I'm very new to marketing in general and basically learning as I go along! :)

Question for you both - do you know good resources on learning about RSS? I know what it looks like but I'm still stuck on understanding the concept and how to implement.

Thanks again.

Sorry to rock the boat, but I disagree.

In short, the people who Market to Search Engines are the ones who are naive in my opinion.

Basic SEO practice should simply be common standard coding practice, working closely with the Marketing dept., to develop appropriate & relevant content. Once central important concepts/key points are decided upon for the page, marketing has their calls-to-action, or perhaps funnel path predictions, then smart white hat SEO techniques should be utilized.

Off-page/site tactics may easily be classified as SEO/SEM/PPC/Whatever, but it really boils down to general Marketing smarts utilizing the new media, techniques, technologies, knowledge, etc.

Lumping all this together under "SEM" creates much more trouble than the other way around, from my experience.

Question. Is the service called MerchantCircle really good at helping to level the playing field online between large and small businesses? Or, is this simply hype? They claim to be very good at providing SEO for an online business. Of course, not all their services are free. But, are they a credible resource? Are they really making a positive difference for small businesses as they claim?
